Research environments are very often of distributed nature. Either driven by limitation of physical resource such as the available compute capacity as done in Metacomputing in the early 90s, by sharing and integrating different resources across organizational boundaries as done in Grid computing and its Virtual Organisation model up to complex eScience environments, nowadays based on Cloud Storage and compute resources to support complex workflows and interaction between researchers.

In this talk the history and development of distributed research environments will be covered and its different models and implications on how data is produced, shared and maintained are covered as well as how the organizational structures in such distributed environments have emerged over the years. Furthermore using the example of the research network BelWü in the region of Baden-Württemberg the implications on the supporting IT infrastructure and the network structure in order to drive this development are presented.
